CORVALLIS, Ore.?Craig Brackins tied a career high with 23 points to help Iowa State outlast Oregon State in a wild overtime thriller Friday night in Corvallis, Ore. Brackins, who notched his second career double-double (23 points, 10 rebounds), made a big hoop with 2:20 left in overtime which was followed by a Jiri Hubalek jumper to put ISU up 64-60 and in command the rest of the game.
The win improved ISU to 3-3 on the season and ended a three-game losing streak for the Cyclones. The victory improves the Big 12 to 2-3 in the Big 12/Pac-10 Hardwood Series.
“It was a good team win,” ISU head coach Greg McDermott said. “The guys played with some heart, played with some passion and we stopped Oregon State from scoring seven of eight times to start the overtime. Every one in the gym is tired at that point and we found a way to dig deep and get a stop. We got the ball inside to Craig and established what we wanted to do to take control.”
Poor free-throws on both sides kept the game close. OSU ended the game going 12-of-24 from the line and the Cyclones were just 11-of-20 from the charity stripe.
The last six minutes of regulation was a see-saw affair. OSU's Josh Tarver gave the Beavers its first lead of the second half at 57-56 with 1:46 left in regulation. However, Brackins came up with a big hoop to put ISU back in front 58-57 with 1:31 left.
ISU's defense, which was solid the entire game, came up with huge stops the rest of the way. The Cyclones had a chance to put the game away, but Brackins missed a free-throw and Rahshon Clark missed a front end of a one-and-one with :14 seconds left with ISU clinging to a 59-57 lead.
OSU then finally made two free-throws when it needed it. Clark fouled Josh Tarver with :06 left and the sophomore made both shots to knot the game at 59-59. Diante Garrett's runner at the buzzer was off the mark, sending the game into the extra period.
The overtime period was virtually all ISU, as the Cyclones stopped the Beavers from scoring in seven of their first eight possessions of the extra session. After Brackins and Hubalek made baskets, ISU then made five-straight free-throws to go up 69-60 with :39 seconds left. Alex Thompson then capped the game on a dunk with :15 seconds remaining. Thompson, who had scored just three points the entire season, tallied a career-high 12 points, including eight in the first half.
“We had lost three games in a row and we had our backs against the wall and we had to get it done,” Thompson said. “We just came out together as a team and found a way to win.”
Thompson, along with Brackins and Clark, combined for 29 of ISU's 31 points in the first half, as the Cyclones held a 31-30 advantage at the break. Clark had another solid game, tallying 15 points and 11 boards to register his fifth career double-double. Clark made 5-of-8 shots from the floor to improve his streak of shooting above 50 percent in every game this season.
ISU held Oregon State to just 28.2 percent shooting and recorded more assists (17) than turnovers (13) for the second consecutive game.
ISU travels to Drake on Wednesday to face the Bulldogs.
