DES MOINES, Iowa? Josh Young scored 23 points and Leonard Houston added 16 points as Drake pulled away early from Iowa State en route to a 79-44 Bulldog victory. Iowa State's hobbling guard Wesley Johnson had 10 points in just 17 minutes to lead the Cyclones, who fell to 3-4 on the season.
ISU committed 21 turnovers and Drake made 15 steals as the Bulldogs outscored the Cyclones 29-4 off ball handling miscues. Drake is now 6-1. “This is my 19th year involved in this game and you have the tendency to see a little bit of everything,” ISU head coach Greg McDermott said. “Tonight was one of those nights. Drake was very good and they deserve all the credit. They beat us at every phase of the game.”
Drake burst out to a 13-5 lead in the first six minutes of the contest and never trailed in the game. A turnaround layin by ISU's Craig Brackins cut the Drake lead to 15-8 with 12:39 left in the first half but the Cyclones could not keep pace as the Bulldogs outscored Iowa State 16-2 on second-chance points. Drake was hot from three-point range as Young hit on four of his five three-point shots and Houston was perfect on three tries.
Iowa State cut the Drake lead to 15 at intermission (35-20) but an early Bulldog surge pushed their advantage to 46-20 with 17:50 left in the game.
Charles Boozer hit on a pair of three-point shots while Jiri Hubalek had five points and a game-high seven rebounds for Iowa State.
The 44 points scored by Iowa State was its lowest total in a game since scoring 43 at Texas Tech on Feb. 22, 2002.
ISU plays host to Iowa on the Saturday in the annual Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series.
