Mission Inn Collegiate Invitational

03.11.2007 | Men's Golf
HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. ? No one had a better third round at the Mission Inn Collegiate Invitational than Iowa State's Cedric Bertin as the men's golf team took advantage of several teams' struggles and reshuffled the final standings. The Cyclones shot their best round of the tournament with a 293 to finish eighth with Louisville being the only school able to match that pace in Sunday's action. Iowa State overtook Charleston Southern, Marshall and Eastern Michigan with strong all-around play after trailing the three schools at the conclusion of Saturday's first two rounds. Louisville wrapped up the team title with a 4-under par 860. Marquette's Mike Van Sickle held on to his first-day lead to claim an individual title with a 4-under par 212.
Bertin set a new career record when he scored a 2-under par 70 in his third round. The junior college All-American transfer previously registered a 71 in the first round at the Wolf Pack Classic. Bertin, a Bruz, France, native also was one stroke away from tying his career-best tournament score as he wrapped up with a three-round score of 222. Bertin separated himself to finish at 27th after ending Saturday's play in 51st.
Joe Cermak and Chris Baker registered Iowa State's top finish as the junior tandem tied for 14th. Cermak, tied for fourth at the completion of the first two rounds, scored a 78 in his final attempt. The junior racked up his fourth top-20 finish year and has 10 in his career. Baker moved up three spots in the final standings after he scored a 69 in the second round. He put a 73 on the scorecard and also earned his fourth top-20 finish this season.
Senior Rodney Hamblin and freshman Cameron White had their best rounds of the tournament carding a 74 and 76, respectively. Hamblin finished tied for 62nd and White ended up at 71st.
The Cyclones will have a week off before heading to Phoenix, Ariz., for the Moore Invitational.
