GOODYEAR, Ariz. ? The Iowa State men's golf team improved in the standings in Tuesday's final round of action at the Ron Moore Invitational hosted by the University of Denver. The Cyclones were two strokes off yesterday's pace of two rounds of 289 but moved past Northern Iowa to take 11th out of 17 teams. Wichita State clung on to their first-day lead and won the team title, shooting 33-under par. Boise State's Troy Merritt sustained up his torrid play to close out the event, registering his third round in the 60's to take home medalist honors.
Joe Cermak finished on a strong note after closing Monday's action with a 69, tying ISU's fourth-best score in team history. The junior carded a 72 in Tuesday's competition to finish in a tie for 23rd. Cermak shot a three-round total of 215 and winded up 1-under par for the tournament.
Chris Baker, who was tied for 20th after the first two rounds, slipped one stroke behind Cermak and eight others to tie for 32nd. Baker was even for the event and ended up with a three-round score of 216.
Cameron White shot up the leaderboard by tying his career-best round with a 69 in his final attempt. His final-round score bested his first-round total by four strokes and finished tied for 34th after ending Monday in a tie for 63rd. The freshman also recorded a 69 in the first round at the Wolf Pack Classic in the fall season.
Cedric Bertin, who has finished with his best score in the final round three times this year, concluded with a 78. He set his career-best score at the Mission Inn Collegiate with a 70 in the third round.
Johnny Larson carded his best total Tuseday with a 76 while Rodney Hamblin placed 54th, third-best among 15 players competing individually. Ross Menke saw his first action of the spring, finishing with a three-round total of 247.
The Cyclones swing out west again for the Stevinson Ranch Invitational March 26-27 in Turlock, Calif. Iowa State shot the school's sixth-best tournament total at the 2004 Stevinson Ranch Invitational, an 865 paced by Tyler Swanson's individual effort of 206.
