2006-07 Iowa State Men's Basketball Season In Review
First-year head coach Greg McDermott faced a daunting task as he entered his initial season as the mentor of the Cyclone basketball program...his predecessor, Wayne Morgan, was relieved of his duties a week after the 2005-06 season ended, leaving a sense of uncertainty of which players would be returning for the Cyclones...ISU had 13 scholarships allotted for the 2006-07 campaign, but after Morgan left, only five scholarship players were remaining, leaving McDermott and his staff in a giant hole as they moved to Ames...when the 2006-07 school year began, McDermott only had four scholarship players on his roster and he filled in many of the holes with signees in April, which is extremely late in the recruiting game...most preseason publications noticed the severe attrition within the ISU program, including the chore of replacing two 1,000-point scorers in Curtis Stinson and Will Blalock, who left with one year remaining to pursue life in professional basketball...ISU was picked to finish 11th in virtually every preseason Big 12 poll and a total rebuilding season looked to be in store...instead what ISU fans witnessed was a young team that played hard every night and never gave up until the final horn sounded...ISU ended the year tying for seventh in the Big 12, recording the same amount of conference wins it did the previous season, going 6-10...Iowa State (15-16, 6-10) began the season by winning its first six games, the ninth team in school history to win its first six contests...in that span, ISU captured the Cyclone Challenge and picked up its first road win in the McDermott era, a 68-63 come-from-behind victory at Minnesota...as ISU's schedule got tougher, the wins became fewer, losing five of its next six games...ISU then rebounded with four-straight wins, including its first two in league play...its first conference road win was impressive, battling back from a 16-point second-half deficit to win on a last-second tip-in at Missouri...it was the second-largest second half comeback in school history...ISU ended the season winning four more Big 12 games, including another road victory at Nebraska (69-63)...ISU lost a close game to NCAA Tournament-bound Texas Tech in its last home game (63-61)...a win would have locked up a top-half finish for ISU, but ISU tied for seventh in the Big 12 standings and got the eighth seed in the Big 12 Championship...ISU fans responded to the new direction of the men's basketball program under McDermott, as the Cyclones ranked fourth in the league in attendance (12,489)...it was the best season average in Hilton Coliseum since the 1994-95 campaign...ISU's defense kept the team in every game with its effort...the Cyclones ranked sixth in the Big 12 and 93rd nationally in scoring defense (65.4 ppg) and 98th nationally in field goal percentage defense (42.2 percent)...only five teams shot above 50 percent vs. ISU during the year...ISU was also a sound rebounding team, outrebounding 19 of 31 opponents for a +1.7 rebounding margin...the team also set a pair of 3-point shooting marks throughout the year...ISU tied the single-game record for treys in a game with 13 against Southeast Missouri State and made 203 on the season, breaking the season school record for 3-pointers made...ISU's ability to keep fouls at a minimum was also a plus...ISU ranked 33rd nationally in least amount of fouls (16.4 fpg), with only 10 teams committing less fouls than the Cyclones in a game.
Iowa State Led By Its Big Three
The Iowa State basketball team lost over 70 percent of its scoring from the season before, as the Cyclones basically had to invent ways to score points...two late signees from McDermott (Mike Taylor, Wesley Johnson) and returning post player Jiri Hubalek were ISU's top scoring options, all taking over games at different points of the season...the trio were responsible for 58.5 percent of ISU's overall scoring and 67.8 percent of the Cyclones' scoring in conference games...only two other players (Dodie Dunson, Corey McIntosh) other than the Big Three led ISU in scoring in a Big 12 contest...Taylor was one of the most dangerous sharpshooters in the conference, hitting a team-high 77 treys, which ranked fifth in the league in 3-pointers made per game (2.48)...Taylor, who led ISU in scoring (16.0 ppg) and assists (4.5 apg), made a trey in his final 27 games to break the school record for consecutive games with a 3-pointer...the junior college transfer recorded three games of six or more 3-pointers and tallied a career-high 33 points at Minnesota...Taylor was named honorable mention all-Big 12 by both the AP and Coaches...Johnson's emergence as a star was an amazing story...the little-known Johnson was second on the team in scoring (12.3 ppg) and led ISU in rebounding at 7.9 rpg...Johnson ended the year ranking third in the Big 12 and 77th nationally on the boards...his 244 caroms was the second-best effort from an ISU rookie and the sixth-best ever by a Big 12 yearling...Johnson, who earned Big 12 all-Newcomer honors and honorable mention Freshman All-America accolades, ranked second in the Big 12 in doubles-doubles (11)...Johnson also led the Cyclones in blocks (33), the third-best total for an ISU freshman, and made 32 treys, which ranks third on ISU's freshman 3-pointers made list...because of ISU's lack of post players, Hubalek made a switch from a perimeter-oriented player to more of a low-post scorer in his second season with the Cyclones...Hubalek responded with some outstanding efforts, averaging 11.2 points and 6.8 rebounds...in league games only, Hubalek ranked seventh in the Big 12 in rebounding at 7.7 rpg...Hubalek posted a pair of 20-point games late in the year, scoring 26 vs. Oklahoma and 25 vs. Texas Tech.
