IRVING, Texas--Iowa State's Mike Taylor and Wesley Johnson were rewarded for their skills on the basketball court this season, as the Phillips 66 Big 12 Men's Basketball Awards were announced Sunday.
Taylor, a junior from Milwaukee, Wis., was named honorable mention all-Big 12 in his first season with the Cyclones after transferring from Chipola Junior College in Florida. Taylor was one of the top outside shooters in the Big 12 this past season, averaging 15.9 ppg and drilling 73 3-pointers, which ranks sixth on ISU's all-time single-season chart. Taylor, who is tied for fifth in the league in assists (4.5), has made a 3-pointer in 26 consecutive games, breaking the school record formerly held by Dedric Willoughby. Taylor leads ISU with nine 20-point games, including a career-high 33 against Minnesota.
Johnson, a freshman from Corsicana, Texas, was named to the Big 12 all-Rookie team after recording one of the best rookie seasons in ISU history. Johnson ranks fourth in the Big 12 in rebounding (8.0 rpg) and is second on the team in scoring at 12.3 ppg. The forward has recorded the second-most double-doubles in the league with 11 and his 31 treys and 33 blocks both rank third on ISU's freshman charts.
