KANSAS CITY, Mo.-- The Kansas City Star announced its annual Big 12 Men's Basketball Specialty Awards today, as Iowa State's Mike Taylor and Wesley Johnson were honored for their exploits this season. Taylor was named to the all-newcomer team and Johnson earned all-freshman accolades.
Taylor, a junior from Milwaukee, Wis., is in his first season with the Cyclones after transferring from Chipola Junior College in Florida. Taylor was one of the top outside shooters in the Big 12 this past season, averaging 15.9 ppg and drilling 73 3-pointers, which ranks sixth on ISU's all-time single-season chart. Taylor, who is tied for fifth in the league in assists (4.5), has made a 3-pointer in 26 consecutive games, breaking the school record formerly held by Dedric Willoughby. Taylor leads ISU with nine 20-point games, including a career-high 33 against Minnesota.
Johnson, a freshman from Corsicana, Texas, recorded one of the best rookie seasons in ISU history. Johnson ranks fourth in the Big 12 in rebounding (8.0 rpg) and is second on the team in scoring at 12.3 ppg. The forward has tallied the second-most double-doubles in the league with 11 and his 31 treys and 33 blocks both rank third on ISU's freshman charts.
