SALT LAKE CITY- Iowa State senior Janet Anson was named a second-team All-American at the 2007 NCAA Championships in Session I of Thursday's preliminary competition at Utah's Jon M. Huntsman Center. Anson tied for eighth place on beam with a score of 9.875 to earn the award.
Competing as an individual all-around competitor, Anson notched a 9.825 on vault, 9.70 on bars, 9.875 on beam, and a 9.850 on the floor. With a total of 39.250, Anson tied for 10th in the all-around, just missing second-team All-America status.
Anson finished her career as the most decorated Iowa State gymnast in school history. The eight-time All-American has been named a First-Team All-American five times, the most of any ISU gymnast. She won 78 individual event titles and ranked among Iowa State's top 10 high scores on three events. This season, Anson was honored as the North Central Region Gymnast of the Year as well as being nominated for the prestigious Honda Sports Award. Anson was named Big 12 Gymnast of the Year in 2006 and 2007, the first gymnast in Big 12 history to earn the honor two years in a row.
As a freshman she was named the league's Newcomer of the Year. Throughout her career, Anson won three Big 12 individual crowns, including her share of the 2007 bars title. Honored as Iowa State's Female Athlete of the Year in 2004 and again in 2006, she competed in the NCAA Individual Event Finals three times. In 2005, she was the national runner-up at the NCAA Championship on vault, the highest finish ever by a Cyclone. Anson was the first Cyclone freshman and only the third Iowa State gymnast to notch perfect 10.0, which she achieved on vault in 2004. She also matched (39.600) and then broke the freshman all-around record (39.700) ranking third all-time at ISU.
