“It is unbelievable and a dream come true,” Koll said. “I felt great the entire race. Mileage is my thing and it paid off today. I kept pace with four girls that I have raced against frequently. I was waiting for my time to go. Winning this race today is a huge confidence booster for the (NCAA Midwest) regional meet (May 25-26 in Des Moines).”
Koll kept pace with Texas Tech runners Irene Kimaiyo and Violet Chemakwila. With less than 10 laps remaining, Koll bolted to a commanding lead As Koll pulled away, her teammates and fans cheered her all the way through to the finish line. The
“It is simply amazing,” said head coach Dick Lee. “It is because of her attitude, hard work and competitiveness that she won it today. It is great to see someone rewarded for their dedication and today was Lisa's day. This year has been a fun year for her; she has done so many great things as only a freshman. This was a great way to kickoff a meet of this caliber and I think it got our team excited for tomorrow's events. I think it will also help boost our team's confidence.”
Koll will make a second run at a title on Sunday evening when she competes in the 5,000-meter run. Competition will be stiff. NCAA champion, Sally Kipyego is scheduled to compete.
The Cyclones will begin action Saturday at 2 p.m. with Agata Kosuda, Priya Hoze and Angie Lageschulte in the long jump. Running events are set for 4 p.m. starting with the 1,500-meter run. Complete results will be posted following the meet on cyclones.com.
