TEMPE, Ariz. ? Erin Boeve had 14 kills and 12 digs for Iowa State but New Mexico used 16 kills from outside hitter Jeanne Fairchild to defeat the Cyclones, 3-0 (32-30, 30-28, 22-30), on Friday afternoon at the Hilton Phoenix/Mesa Challenge.
The Cyclones (1-3) hit just .163 as a team and were out blocked for the second straight match, nine to seven. Victoria Henson joined Boeve in double figures with 10 kills. Jen Malcom led Iowa State on the block, recording six block assists.
Kerri Beck had 10 kills while Lisa Meeter and Gayle Tripp had 16 and 15 digs, respectively, for New Mexico, which hit .257 as a team and improved to 5-0 on the season.
New Mexico went to Fairchild for seven first game kills to take the 32-30 win and go up 1-0 in the match. The Lobos hit .486 to Iowa State's .239 and fought off one ISU match point at 30-29 to get the win.
The Cyclones and Lobos played another close game with New Mexico coming out on top 30-28 and taking a 2-0 edge in the match. The Lobos jumped out to a 19-9 lead but ISU scrapped back into the match to tie it at 24-24. The Cyclones were unable to take the lead in the game despite numerous opportunities down the stretch.
Iowa State scored the first six points of game three but couldn't hold off a scrappy New Mexico team and fell 30-22 to lose the match in a sweep. The Lobos hit .353 compared to .220 for Iowa State in the third game.
The Cyclones will take the court at 3 p.m. Saturday for a match against the host Arizona State.
