TEMPE, Ariz. ? Erin Boeve equaled a career-high with 28 kills and Iowa State had three others in double-figures but the Cyclones were unable to hold off Arizona State as they fell to the Sun Devils, 3-2 (24-30, 30-22, 30-17, 21-30, 10-15), on Saturday afternoon in the Hilton Phoenix/Mesa Challenge in Tempe, Ariz.
Boeve had 12 digs to go along with her 28 kills and Diane Kieger added 15 kills, four solo blocks and three block assists. Joining Boeve and Kieger in double figures were Lauren Cummings and Jen Malcom with 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Amy Vos had a career-high 15 digs while Laura Cady added 14. Kaylee Manns had 62 assists in the match as Iowa State hit .233 as a team.
Sarah Reaves had 14 kills and Danielle Fernandes added 13 to pace the Arizona State offense. Sydney Donahue led the defense with 23 digs.
Iowa State hit .333 in the first game but Arizona State hit at a .417 clip and cruised to a 30-24 win to go up 1-0 in the match. The Cyclones led at 10-9 before the Sun Devils took the lead for good at 12-11. Boeve paced Iowa State with six first game kills while Laura Cady had five digs.
The Cyclones never trailed in the second game and went onto pick up a 30-22 win and tie it up at 1-1 heading into game three. Iowa State's defense stepped up and dominated the net, holding the Sun Devils to just a .056 hitting percentage. Boeve added another six kills in the second game to pace the Cyclones, who hit .282 as a team.
Iowa State went up 2-1 after blistering the ball at a .355 clip en route to a dominant 30-17 win. The Cyclones again dominated at the net, holding Arizona State to a -.029 hitting percentage. Boeve had seven kills to bring her total to 19 on the match.
Game four was all Arizona State as the Sun Devils hit .353 and jumped out to an early lead and hung on to win 30-21 and force a decisive fifth game.
After Arizona State took a quick 3-0 lead the Cyclones fought back to tie it up at 5-5 on a kill by Lauren Cummings. The Sun Devils regained the lead and pushed it back to three at 10-7, forcing a timeout by the Cyclones.
The timeout worked as ISU got back-to-back kills from Kieger and junior Mary Bisenius to force Arizona State to call its first timeout of the game. The Sun Devils would score five of the next six points to defeat the Cyclones, 15-10, and take the match.
The Cyclones will close out tournament play with a match on Sunday at noon (CT) against Long Island, an NCAA Tournament qualifier from a year ago.
