TEMPE, Ariz. ? Erin Boeve had 17 kills and was named to the all-tournament team after leading Iowa State to a 3-1 (30-32, 31-29, 30-23, 30-22) win over Long Island on Sunday at the Hilton Phoenix/Mesa Challenge in Tempe, Ariz.
Lauren Cummings, Jen Malcom and Mary Bisenius also reached double figures for the Cyclones with 13, 12 and 11 kills, respectively. The 11 kills was a career-high for Bisenius, a native of Sioux City, Iowa.
Defensively, Malcom dominated the net with a solo stuff and 11 block assists to pick up the double-double. As a team, Iowa State out blocked the Blackbirds, 18 to 12. Laura Cady had 15 digs in the win with Kaylee Manns chipping in 14 and Ashley Mass recording a career-best 10.
Long Island (3-3) was led by Martina Wagner, who had 15 kills and 11 digs to go along with four service aces. Libero Svetlana Simic had a match-high 22 digs in the loss.
Long Island took game one 32-30 despite being out hit .353 to .333. The Cyclones led 15-10 before the Blackbirds went on a 9-3 run to take their first lead at 19-18. ISU scrapped its way back into the game and tied it at 28-28 following a pair of miscues by Long Island. The Blackbirds, who got eight kills from Wagner in the game, used a service error and attack error by ISU to take the 1-0 lead in the match.
The Cyclones trailed 27-19 in game two before rallying to score 10 straight points and reclaim the lead, their first since the score was 2-1. Long Island bounced back to tie it at 29-29 but the Cyclones took advantage of a LIU attack error to go up 30-29 and got a block assist from Bisenius and Diane Kieger to win the game, 31-29, and tie the match at 1-1.
Iowa State rolled with the momentum of the game two win to pick up a 30-23 win and go ahead 2-1 in the match. After taking a 5-0 lead in the game, ISU fought off a fierce rally by Long Island that cut the lead to two on numerous occasions. The Cyclones put the match away with a 4-0 run after the Blackbirds made it 22-19.
The Cyclones hit .371 to take the 30-22 game four win and the match, 3-1. Iowa State led at 3-2 following back-to-back kills from Boeve and never looked back en route to its second win of the season.
The Cyclones head to Cedar Falls Wednesday for a match against intrastate rival Northern Iowa. First serve from the McLeod Center is slated for 7 p.m.
