Cyclones Beat UNI, 3-0; Boeve Gets 1,000th Kill

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa ? Iowa State set a school record for digs in a three-game match since the inception of the rally scoring era with 83 and Erin Boeve became just the seventh player in school history to surpass 1,000 career kills as Iowa State cruised to a 3-0 (30-23, 32-30, 30-26) sweep of Northern Iowa in front of 5,124 at the McLeod Center Wednesday evening.

The win, Iowa State's third straight over Northern Iowa (3-4), makes the Cyclones 6-0 against Iowa schools under the direction of third year head coach Christy Johnson.

The Cyclones (3-4) used their trademark solid defense and tough serving to offset a sluggish hitting night, which saw ISU hit just .136 as a team. The Cyclones 83 digs broke the old record of 76, which was set in the 2005 season opener at Creighton.

“I thought tonight was about our serving, passing and defense,” said Johnson. “We didn't hit for a high percentage tonight but I felt like we served and passed as well as we have all season and that was the difference.”

Lauren Cummings led the Cyclones with 17 kills, including six in the first and third games. Boeve joined Cummings in double-figures with 11 while Jen Malcom added nine. Kaylee Manns had 39 assists and tied a career-high with 23 digs in the win. Laura Cady added 21 digs and Amy Vos chipped in 11.

Laura Rowen was the lone Panther in double-figures with 11 kills.

Iowa State used a 10-1 run to start the match and held off Northern Iowa to pick up the 30-23 win in the first game. Lauren Cummings paced the Cyclones, who hit just .146 but out dug the Panthers 23-15, with six kills on nine attempts.

In the second game, ISU again opened up a quick lead, scoring the first four points and forcing a Northern Iowa timeout. The Cyclones led 26-20 but the Panthers scrapped back, scoring eight of the next 10 points to tie it at 28-28. A kill by Malcom gave the edge back to the Cyclones but the Panthers tied it again at 29-29. The teams were tied at 30 when the Panthers were called for a double-hit to make it 31-30 before Vos served it deep and tied up the Panther defender for the service ace and the 32-30 win, putting the Cyclones up 2-0 heading into the intermission.

The teams battled back-and-forth in the third game with Iowa State grabbing the lead at 15-14 on Boeve's milestone kill. UNI eventually went up 24-22, forcing an Iowa State timeout. The Cyclones scored the next four points and pushed the lead to 27-25 on a kill by Cummings. After UNI scored to make it 27-26, Iowa State's Mary Bisenius recorded the final three points of the match, all on kills, to secure the 30-26 win and the sweep.

The Cyclones head to Des Moines for the Drake Tournament this weekend. Iowa State will open action on Friday against 22^nd-ranked LSU at 5 p.m.
