ISU Soccer Takes Season-Opener Over Oakland

AMES, Iowa ? Erin Witte scored twice as the Iowa State soccer team defeated Oakland, 2-1, in its season-opener Sunday afternoon at the ISU Soccer Complex.

The Cyclones (1-0-0) outshot the Golden Grizzlies (0-2-0), 18-4, on the day.

ISU wasted no time, getting on the board in the third minute, as Witte took an Elise Reid pass in the center of the box and kicked it high past the Oakland goalkeeper. Leslie Hill got the play started by serving the ball into the box and was credited with the second assist.

After nearly 58 minutes of scoreless play, Oakland capitalized with the equalizer in one of its few scoring chances on the day. Jessica Boyle played the ball into the box to an open Jessica Boyle, who was able to chip it past an oncoming Ann Gleason.

But Witte scored the difference maker in the 79^th minute. Stephanie Kaphingst found Witte halfway between midfield and the 18-yard box and Witte fought off defenders to the top of the box, where she unleashed a rocket into the lower left corner of the net.

The Witte goals continue a trend set in the preseason as the senior scored in each of the two exhibition games.

Ann Gleason (1-0-0) earned the win in net for the Cyclones, making two saves. Kim Herbst (0-2-0) took the loss for the Golden Grizzlies, corralling seven saves.

The Cyclones return to action Friday when they play host to intrastate rival Northern Iowa. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m. at the ISU Soccer Complex.
