LUBBOCK, Texas ? Iowa State middle blocker Erin Boeve narrowly missed a triple-double with 17 kills, nine digs and eight block assists and Ashley Mass had 23 digs as the Cyclones rolled to a 3-1 (30-15, 30-25, 28-30, 30-17) win over Texas Tech, their ninth in 10 matches after starting the season 1-4, on Saturday afternoon at United Spirit Arena.
Boeve, a senior from
Mass, the Big 12's leader in digs per game, continued her stellar play with 23 digs, marking the second straight match the freshman has recorded 20 or more. Laura Cady had 15 and Kaylee Manns and Amy Vos each added 13 for
Alicia Ostmeyer was the lone Red Raider (7-8, 1-5 Big 12) to reach double-figures with 11 kills. Jenn Harrell had 20 digs as Texas Tech dropped its fifth straight match.
The Cyclones trailed 14-12 in the second game before back-to-back kills from Cummings and Victoria Henson tied it. The teams traded points until Boeve and Henson teamed up to block an Amy Gandy attack and give the Cyclones the lead for good at 23-22. Mass followed with back-to-back service aces as the Cyclones widened the gap to 25-22 and hung on for the 30-25 win to go into intermission with a 2-0 lead.
The Red Raiders grabbed control early in the third game and held off a furious Cyclone rally late to capture a 30-28 third game win and force a fourth game.
The Cyclones wouldn't allow Texas Tech to force a deciding fifth game as the visitors raced out to a 10-1 lead to open the fourth game. After Cummings broke Tech's serve with a kill, Mass served ISU to seven straight points. The Cyclones went on to the 30-17 win to improve to 4-1 in conference play, their best start since 1995 when ISU started 6-1 in the Big Eight.
