MANHATTAN, Kan.? Kansas State's Michael Beasley poured in 33 points and grabbed 15 rebounds en route to a 82-57 win over Iowa State Saturday evening in Manhattan, Kan. ISU, which falls to 12-8 on the season and 2-3 in Big 12 play, had its second consecutive poor shooting night, making just 33.9 percent from the field in the loss. ISU is now 2-15 in the Greg McDermott era when giving up 70 or more points.
"We had a defense to try and slow him (Beasley) down, but there was just no stopping him," ISU head coach Greg McDermott said. "Both on the backboards and facing the basket, we had no answer for him."
A cold start by the Cyclones allowed the Wildcats to jump out to a 14-8 lead with 10:55 left in the opening period. ISU made just two of its first 14 shots to begin the game. KSU's lead grew to 10 points (19-9) with 8:40 left in the first half as the Cyclones continued to misfire from the field. Craig Brackins finally got the offense going by making a turnaround in the paint and a long trey to cut the lead to 22-14 with just under eight minutes left in the first half.
ISU finally began to get some shots to fall, but so did the Wildcats. Wesley Johnson and Rahshon Clark each drilled a pair of treys in the final six minutes of the half, but ISU could not counter, as the Wildcats heated up to take a 46-30 lead at the break. The Wildcats made 8-of-16 3-pointers in the first half, including four in the final four minutes of the opening period.
The Wildcats increased their lead to 21 points (61-39) with 13:21 left in the contest, as Beasley scored nine of KSU's first 13 points of the second half. Beasley then scored seven consecutive points to give the Wildcats a comfortable 69-41 lead with 10:38 remaining in the game.
Johnson, who led the Cyclones with 20 points, moved into ISU's career top-20 in 3-pointers by burying four treys in the game. Johnson now ranks 18th with 63 career 3-pointers. Johnson has scored in double figures in 10 consecutive games and tallied 20 or more points in four-straight contests. Brackins added 10 points, scoring in double figures in all five league games this season for ISU.
ISU returns home to face Colorado on Tuesday (Jan. 29). Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum.
