“We started out slow in the first set,” Iowa State head coach Christy Johnson said. “Victoria (Henson) really struggled that first game, but I was really proud of the way she came back. She was hitting negative in that first game, but she ended up hitting about .250 and that just tells you she made a huge turnaround, which isn't easy to do when you are playing a good team.”
Henson finished the match with 19 kills, recording her ninth straight match in double figures and breaking the sophomore record for kills in a season with eight matches left in the regular season. Henson has 349 kills on the season, with the previous high coming from Erin Boeve (344) in 2005.
Rachel Hockaday joined Henson in double-figures with 16 kills, while Ashley Mass dug a match-high 19 balls in the win. Hockaday and Amy Vos added nine digs. Kaylee Manns finished with 54 assists and seven digs in the contest. Diane Kieger came off the bench to record nine kills and hit .375.
Johnson praised Kieger's effort following the match.
“I thought Kieger did a tremendous job. She hit very well. She blocked. She knew her blocking responsibilities and she knew where she had to go,” Johnson said. “Most importantly, she was aggressive. There were a couple plays there where the set wasn't perfect but she just went after it and got kills and that's contagious and just helps the rest of the team.”
In the first set, ISU struggled offensively committing 10 hitting errors to fall 25-21. Jen Malcom led the way for ISU in the frame with four kills on six swings.
In the second, Iowa State trailed 7-2 but scored the next seven points behind Caitlin Mahoney's potent jump serve to go on top 9-7. A Kelsey Petersen kill increased Iowa State's lead to 17-13 but Baylor scrapped back, taking a 19-18 lead following an Ashlie Christenson kill. The Cyclones responded with three straight points to take a 21-19 advantage but Baylor again fought to get back in it, knotting the score at 23 and 24 before Kieger finished the set with back-to-back kills for the 26-24 win.
Set three was all Iowa State as the Cyclones took the 8-7 lead on a kill from Henson and cruised on to the 25-18 win behind a .364 hitting percentage.
Iowa State sealed the victory with a 26-24 fourth set win, hitting .333 to overcome Baylor's .400 percentage in the set. The teams battled to 16 ties, including a 24-all score after Baylor fought off three match points. After the score was tied, ISU went to its top offensive threats in Henson and Hockaday to get the win.
Baylor had three players in double-digits in the match, led by Katie Sanders with 11. Anna Breyfogle and Briana Tolbert chipped in 10 in the losing effort. Allison King had 18 digs to lead the Bears.
ISU outblocked the Bears, 10.5 to 10, but was outhit .241 to .236. The Cyclones are now 1-7 on the season when being outhit.
Iowa State will take its winning streak on the road for a Saturday showdown with second-ranked Nebraska, who was upset by Colorado tonight. First serve from the NU Coliseum is slated for 3 p.m.
“This win can only help our confidence,” Johnson said. “Anytime you are in a tight game and you come out with a win and at least you respond to it the right way and it gives you confidence. We are playing as well as we can be right now. We'll see what happens.”
