“I think this was an important match for us,” Johnson said. “It's another team that we are kind of in the middle of the pack with, so this was key for us heading into the bye.
“I think this time off is going to help us. Our preseason was so grueling. I usually like to give a couple days off by now, but we haven't been able to give them one day off, so we will take a day off this week. It doesn't sound like much, but to them it's heaven.”
Johnson also praised the play of the freshmen Petersen, who bounced back from a tough night at Missouri on Wednesday to finish with the best match of her career.
“Kelsey struggled Wednesday night, so I was excited to see her come back,” Johnson said. “This is probably the first match I have seen her be a dominant blocker, and that is one of the reasons she is out there. I'm really excited to see that because I think she can be an unbelievable right side blocker. We hadn't seen the numbers yet, but I think we saw them tonight.”
The Cyclones also got nine kills from senior Jen Malcom, who hit .643 to improve her season percentage to .414. Malcom and Diane Kieger had four block assists each in the match. Rachel Hockaday finished with nine kills and nine digs while Ashley Mass had a match-high 15 digs. Setter Kaylee Manns had 43 assists and nine digs to go along with two kills and two block assists.
The Sooners were led by eight kills from Caitlin Higgins and 12 digs from Bridget Laplante.
In the first set, ISU hit .516 and had four blocks to cruise to the 25-15 win. The Cyclones used a 6-0 run to get a cushion and push its lead to 12-4 en route to the win. Henson came out blasting with six first-set kills while freshman Caitlin Mahoney had five digs in the frame.
Set two was tight with 18 ties and seven lead changes but ISU was able to fend off the Sooners for the 26-24 win. Trailing 20-19, ISU ran off four straight, two of which came on blocks as Petersen and Kieger teamed up to shut down OU's Higgins, to go up 23-20. The Sooners scored three straight to tie the score at 23-23 and both teams got a kill to make it 24-24. A kill from Malcom and Mahoney's powerful jump serve ace wrapped up the win for the Cyclones.
The third set was all Cyclones as ISU hit .417 behind five Hockaday kills to take the 25-14 win and earn the sweep.
The Cyclones will be back in action Saturday with a 2 p.m. match at Baylor (12-3, 4-1).
