"This game was similar to our exhibition game against Nebraska-Omaha," McDermott said. "Our starters got us off to a good start at the beginning of the game and the second half, but we slowed down a little bit in the middle of both halves. We got 29 points last night and 32 points tonight from our bench, which I was pleased with."
The Cyclones raced out to a quick 10-2 lead at the first media timeout. Sean Haluska and Wes Eikmeier buried a pair of deep treys to give Iowa State the early advantage. The Cyclone lead grew to 12 points at 18-6 with 11:50 remaining in the opening period. Cameron Lee hit a trey and Eikmeier knocked down his second bomb to help ISU take control.
LMU (0-2) slowly chipped away at the lead, going on a 13-2 run to cut the gap to 28-26 with 2:52 left before intermission. ISU's Craig Brackins halted the run with a conventional 3-point play, as ISU went into the break clinging to a 33-30 lead.
The Cyclones rode the back of Brackins to begin the second half. Brackins scored 12 of ISU's first 14 points in the second period to help the home team increase its lead to 47-35 with 14:20 left. Brackins made 5-of-6 shots from the floor in the Cyclone run.
ISU's lead ballooned to 22 points (60-38) behind a 13-0 run with 7:21 left in the game. Eikmeier hit two treys and reserve post players Justin Hamilton and Jamie Vanderbeken knocked down a pair of baseline jumpers to tally 10 of ISU's points in the rally.
Brackins ended the game with 21 points, his sixth 20-point game of his career. Eikmeier added 15 points behind five treys, as ISU hit 10 or more 3-pointers (10) for the first time since Feb. 6, 2007 (Missouri). Diante Garrett handed out a career-high 11 assists, marking the first time a Cyclone tallied double-digit assists since Curtis Stinson dished out 10 vs. Colorado in 2006.
ISU will battle UW-Milwaukee tomorrow night at 7 p.m. in the final round of the World Vision Classic.
