STILLWATER, Okla. ? The Iowa State men's and women's cross country teams finished fourth and ninth, respectively Saturday at the NCAA Midwest Regional Cross Country Championship. Junior Guor Marial was first across the finish line for the men's squad and eighth overall (31:21) in the 10,000-meter race. Paige Ties was first for the women with a time of 21:53 in the 6,000-meter race, finishing 32nd overall.
Senior Kiel Uhl and sophomore Hillary Bor finished 12th and 13th for the men's squad with times of 31:30 and 31:32, respectively. Iowa State's chance for a berth to the national NCAA championship in Terre Haute, Ind. on Nov. 23rd lies with the NCAA selection committee.
“I'm a little disappointed,” said head coach Corey Ihmels. “Our future is with the hands of the NCAA committee. I think a bid is likely but also I think we could've run better than we did.”
Meaghan Nelson, who was first across the finish line for the Cyclones at the Big 12 Cross Country Championships, finished only eight seconds behind Ties, for a 35th-place finish. The duo helped the Cyclones to a ninth-place finish in the 27-team field.
“The women did really well," Ihmels said. "Dani Stack was hurt, so she wasn't able to run as well as she could have. If you look where we could have finished if she'd had been healthy we would've been about where we ended up last year, but it was a great performance overall for the women.”
Hassan Mead and Chris Rombough finished first and second for the Minnesota Gophers, but Oklahoma State's quartet of top-ten finishers led the Cowboy's to a first-place team finish. The Minnesota women's team finished in top form as well, having all five top runners finish in the top twenty.
The Cyclone cross country teams have November 24th circled on the schedule, but it is still to be determined if the men's team will receive an invitation to the NCAA cross country championship in Terre Haute, Ind.
