“This is a tough one to swallow,” ISU head coach Greg McDermott said. “We made some plays that weren't very smart, and at times we made some good plays on both ends of the floor. Down the stretch, we played too passively on the defensive end of the floor.”
ISU got off to a slow start, falling down 10-2 while making just 1-of-7 shots from the floor in the opening minutes of the game. The Cyclones then cut the lead to 10-9 with a 7-0 run behind a Bryan Petersen 3-pointer.
UH answered by mounting a 15-4 run, increasing its lead to 25-13 with 3:35 left in the first half. However, the Cyclones quickly got back into the game by closing the half with a 9-0 run to go into the break down 25-22. Diante Garrett scored five points and Justin Hamilton added four points, including a tip-in with 0:07 left, in the run to give ISU new life. ISU made just 8-of-28 shots from the field (28.6 percent) in the opening period.
The Cyclones picked up where they left off in the second half, racing out to a 44-31 lead with 12:40 left in the game. UH closed the gap to 44-37, but back-to-back conventional 3-point plays by Garrett gave ISU a 50-37 lead with 10:05 remaining.
The Rainbow Warriors slowly crept back into the game, taking a 51-50 lead with 5:14 left on the clock. ISU then scored six-straight points on a pair of Garrett free-throws and baskets by Alex Thompson and Hamilton, as ISU held a seven-point lead (58-51) with 2:22 left in the game.
UH's Roderick Flemings made two foul shots, then Adhar Mayen buried a key trey and Petras Balocka scored on a drive down low to tie the game at 58-58 with 0:39 left. ISU went for the final shot, as Garrett drove the lane and missed, but Craig Brackins grabbed the rebound and was fouled with 0:02.6 left on the clock. Brackins missed his first attempt, but made the second foul shot to put ISU up, 59-58.
UH had to go the full length of the court for the final shot, but Brackins fouled Amis with 0:02.4 left on the clock. Amis made both free-throws and Garrett's half-court shot was off the mark at the buzzer.
Garrett finished the game with a career-high 26 points on 7-of-16 shooting from the floor and a 10-of-10 effort from the foul line. It was the most points scored by a Cyclone since Brackins' 33 points vs. Baylor last year. He is the 16th Cyclone in school history to be perfect from the foul line with 10 or more attempts.
Amis led the Rainbow Warriors with 17 points. Brackins added 10 points for his sixth-straight double-digit scoring effort for the Cyclones.
ISU is back in action on Saturday (Nov. 29), playing host to Mississippi Valley State at 12:30 p.m.
