"Obviously, I was disappointed in our start," ISU head coach Greg McDermott said. "We were very lethargic. Bryan (Petersen) really sparked us. He understands that we need a lot out of him and he is a senior that has a terrific understanding of the game. Making shots is one thing, but he was diving on the floor and trying to make hustle plays."
MVSU had its offense clicking at the start, holding an 11-10 lead with 15:15 left before intermission. The Delta Devils made 5-of-their-first-6 shots from the floor behind two baskets from Eric Petty to stake the early lead.
A Sean Haluska trey and Brackins' score in the paint was a part of a 10-3 Cyclone run that put ISU up 17-14 with 11:17 left in the first half. However, the Delta Devils answered with five-straight points behind a Shannon Behling 3-pointer to help MVSU retake the lead at 19-17 with just under 10 minutes before intermission.
ISU's defense put the clamps down during an 11-0 run to forge ahead 28-21 with 2:12 left before half. ISU forced seven consecutive Delta Devil misses and three turnovers in the run, as Brackins scored on a conventional 3-point play and Lucca Staiger buried a trey in the corner to help ISU move ahead. However, MVSU bounced back with the final seven points of the half, including five from Eric Petty, to go into the break tied at 28-28.
Bryan Petersen came off the bench to spark the Cyclones in the second half. Petersen knocked down two treys and fed Brackins on a pair of easy buckets down low to help ISU move ahead 44-37 with 12:32 left in the game.
ISU broke open the game with a 10-4 run to take a 59-46 lead with 6:47 left. Petersen buried another trey and Eikmeier connected on a deep 3-pointer to give the Cyclones a comfortable lead.
Brackins ended the game with 20 points to notch his seventh 20-point outing of his career. Eikmeier came off the bench to score 13 points behind a 3-of-5 effort from distance. Behling led the Delta Devils with 21 points.
ISU held MVSU to 38.6 percent shooting from the floor, keeping its opponents to under 40 percent shooting in all five games this year. It marks the first time ISU has held five-straight opponents to below 40 percent from the floor since the 2003-04 season.
ISU travels to Northern Iowa on Wednesday. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
