“I am really proud of my team,” McDermott said. “There were two teams out there with a lot of young guys playing tonight. It wasn't always perfect on both ends, but we had the one stretch in the second half that helped us and we rode our horse (Brackins) to get the victory.”
The first half went back and forth, featuring four ties and seven lead changes. ISU held the biggest advantage of the first half at 16-11 with 12:09 left to play after Jamie Vanderbeken buried a trey and Wes Eikmeier connected on a jumper. Brackins was ISU's go-to player, scoring 13 first-half points on 6-of-11 shooting from the floor.
UNI took its first lead (27-26) of the opening period with 6:20 left before intermission on a pair of Adam Koch free-throws. Kwadzo Ahelegbe then scored four of his 11 first-half points in the final five minutes to give the Panthers a 33-31 advantage at the break. ISU made 9-of-15 shots from the field to open the game, but cooled down the rest of the way, connecting on just 3-of-12 from the floor to close the half.
UNI increased its lead to five points (46-41) with 13:16 left in regulation behind a 7-2 run. Ahelegbe hit a trey and Johnny Moran knocked down a turnaround jumper to power the Panthers into the lead.
The Panther lead quickly vanished, however, as UNI went just under six minutes without a point while the Cyclones mounted a 12-0 run to go ahead 53-46 with 6:51 remaining. Brackins scored six points in the run.
But the Panthers stormed back with a 10-2 run to move ahead 56-55 with 3:35 remaining in regulation. The Cyclones then took control again with Brackins tallying four points to help ISU forge a 61-56 lead with 1:26 left. UNI came back on its next possession with a big trey from Ali Farokhmanesh to cut the gap to 61-59 with 1:07 remaining.
Garrett had a chance to put the game away at the free-throw line, but the sophomore made just 1-of-2 at the charity stripe, giving UNI a chance down three with less then 0:30 seconds remaining. Dunham then got free in the corner and buried a trey for the Panthers and Garrett was off the mark with the final shot in regulation.
Garrett stepped up in overtime, giving ISU a 67-66 lead with 1:42 left on a pair of nice drives to the hoop. Again ISU had a chance to put UNI away at the line, but misfired twice while clinging to a 69-66 lead with 0:21 seconds left. Farokhmanesh misfired on his 3-point attempt and Bryan Petersen corralled the rebound and was promptly fouled. The senior calmly sank both free-throws to ice the game for the Cyclones.
Brackins' 32-point outburst was one shy off his career mark of 33 he set last year vs. Baylor and broke the McLeod Center record for points in a game. Brackins also grabbed a career-high 16 caroms to record his fourth double-double of his career.
“It was a great game and it feels good to win one on the road,” Brackins said. “Coach told me I had to be aggressive and the shots were falling today.”
Garrett finished with 17 points and had a team-high four assists.
ISU, which mixed in a 3-2 zone in stretches in both halves, held UNI to 33.8 percent shooting from the floor, marking the sixth consecutive game where the Cyclones held an opponent to below 40-percent shooting.
The Cyclones, who improve to 5-1 with the win, will play host to Oregon State at 1 p.m. in a Big 12-Pac-10 Hardwood Series matchup on Saturday.
