"This is a good win for us," ISU head coach Greg McDermott said. "I don't think we gave up any back cut layups the entire game. Our defense did what we set out to do."
The Cyclones went back to their ace in the hole, 3-point shooting, to take an early lead, drilling 4-of-6 shots from downtown in the first eight minutes to establish a 17-8 lead. Bryan Petersen buried two treys and Staiger and Wes Eikmeier each tallied one to help ISU take control early.
ISU maintained its lead at 23-16 with 5:36 left in the first half after a Brackins baseline jumper. The Cyclones increased their lead to 11 points (29-18) on back-to-back 3-point plays with 4:06 left before intermission. Staiger nailed a long-ball from the corner and Brackins scored on a conventional 3-point play. ISU went into the break with a 33-24 advantage.
The Cyclones tallied the first two baskets of the second half on a Staiger lay-in and a Brackins dunk to move ahead by 13 points (37-24), but the Beavers answered with buckets by Roeland Schaftenaar and Daniel Deane to cut the lead back down to nine at the first media timeout of the second period.
Sean Haluska knocked down a trey to give ISU its largest lead at 50-36 with 9:22 left in the game, but the Beavers bounced right back with eight consecutive points to close the gap to six at 50-44 with 6:20 remaining. Staiger finally ended a nearly five-minute Cyclone scoring drought with a big trey from the wing to push ISU back out in front, 53-44 with 4:51 remaining.
After OSU clipped the lead down to six points, Diante Garrett hit a baseline jumper and Staiger drilled a 34-foot desperation heave with the shot clock running down to give ISU a comfortable 60-49 cushion with 0:53 seconds left.
Brackins recorded his second consecutive double-double and has reached double figures in scoring in 10-straight games dating back to last season. Garrett finished with eight points, seven assists and seven boards in the Cyclone victory.
ISU will play host to Drake on Tuesday at 8 p.m.
