AMES, Iowa ? Iowa State pushed fourth-ranked Texas to the limit in sets one and two, but ultimately fell short and dropped a 3-0 (27-29, 26-28, 17-25) decision to the Longhorns Saturday night at Hilton Coliseum in front of 4,026 fans. With the second-largest crowd on hand, ISU went over 20,000 fans on the season for the first time in school history.
“I think we were right there, point-for-point, in games one and two,” Iowa State head coach Christy Johnson said. “We just ran out of steam in game three. The good thing is we can play with some of the best teams in the country for at least a part of the match. We have to be able to do it for longer. Physically and skill level, I think we are right there with the best teams in the country.”

The night was also a milestone night for sophomore libero Ashley Mass as she became the 10th Cyclone to surpass 1,000 career digs. Mass accomplished the feat faster than any other player, recording her milestone dig in the 59th match of her career. The previous mark belonged to Brittany Dalager, who reached 1,000 in her 75th match.
Johnson praised Mass following the match, not just for her defense but for her ability to put the ball on the spot.
“She is just so good passing and defensively. There are not many liberos in the country that are exceptional at both,” Johnson said. “She is very consistent. You know every night she is going to pass really well, she is going to dig a lot of balls and she serves tough. I think she's got the all-around game, and you just know what you are going to get from her every night and that's a really good thing.”
Victoria Henson posted a match-high 14 kills, reaching double-figures for the 12th straight match. Henson was joined in double-figures by Jen Malcom, who finished with 10 kills to reach double-digits for the first time in five matches. Malcom hit .500 in the match.
Kaylee Manns had a solid all-around match for the Cyclones, dishing out 41 assists, digging seven balls and posting a season-high five block assists in the loss. Manns also had three kills in the contest.
In the end, ISU (16-10, 8-7 Big 12) was unable to stop the Texas' attack as the Longhorns (19-3, 12-2) hit .330 in the match. Big 12 kills leader Destinee Hooker finished with a team-high 13 kills for the Longhorns. Ashley Engle and Lauren Paolini had 11 kills each and Juliann Faucette added 10.
“When you have someone like Destinee Hooker, you have to serve the ball really tough,” Johnson said. “You have to play great defense behind it. When you get the chance to swing for a point, you have to get the ball in play and get kills and we were a little shy of that tonight. We needed to put the ball in play and put more pressure on them.”
The Cyclones struggled out of the gate, falling behind 8-1 in the first set before pulling together and tying the score at 9-9 following a kill from Henson. The set went back-and-forth from there, featuring 13 tie scores. ISU was never able to get the lead though and Texas took the set 29-27 despite the Cyclones fighting off four set points.
The Longhorns hit .297 behind six kills from Paolini in the set that saw 11 total blocks, including six from Texas.
In the second frame, ISU held a 16-11 edge and went up 20-17 on a kill from Rachel Hockaday. The Longhorns scored the next three points to tie it and the teams see-sawed back-and-forth for the second straight set. ISU had set point after a Henson kill made it 25-24 but Texas set Hooker who slammed it to the floor to tie it up. Texas scored the next point but Diane Kieger tied it back up on one of her seven kills. Kills from Hooker and Faucette gave the set to Texas, 28-26.
In the third set, Texas used an 11-5 run to end the set and take the 25-17 win and wrap up the sweep.
The Longhorns finished with 12 blocks to ISU's eight. ISU outdug Texas 51-42 and the Longhorns held just a one-kill edge in that column. Both teams finished with two service aces.
Iowa State will be back in action Wednesday at Texas A&M. First serve from G. Rollie White Coliseum is slated for 6:30 p.m.
