AMES, Iowa ? Omaha, Neb. native Tim Bennett, the head women's soccer coach at Portland State who also led the North Dakota program, has been named associate head coach at Iowa State, Cyclone head coach Wendy Dillinger announced Thursday. Bennett led Portland State to the Big Sky Tournament, the Vikings' first league postseason berth since 2004.
"Tim Bennett brings a wealth of experience to the Cyclone soccer program,” Dillinger said. “His passion for the game, work ethic, soccer knowledge and connections are tremendous assets that will play an important role in building the program. Character is among Tim's strengths and I am delighted to have a quality person joining the staff."
Bennett led Portland State to a 9-9-2 Big Sky Conference record over the past three seasons. The Vikings contended for the Big Sky regular season title down to the final match of the last two seasons, despite fielding teams that were mostly comprised of underclassmen. He coached North Dakota to a 14-5-2 overall record in the 2004 campaign, his only season leading the Fighting Sioux.
“I am looking forward to coaching at Iowa State,” Bennett said. “I look forward to being closer to home. I'll have the chance to work with Wendy Dillinger, someone that I've respected as a coach and as a person for a long time.”
Bennett has compiled a four-year head coaching mark of 30-39-7 and has coached five all-region and 10 first-team all-conference performers. He has also coached three conference MVP winners, including Portland State senior defender Juli Edwards, who was the Big Sky Conference Defensive MVP in both 2006 and 2007.
Prior to being a head coach, Bennett served eight seasons as an assistant coach at Kentucky. He was an assistant for the men's program from 1996-99 and the women's team from 1999-2003, helping the Wildcat men and women to a combined four NCAA Tournament appearances.
