DES MOINES, Iowa- The Iowa State tennis team won in dramatic fashion on?Friday, defeating Drake, 4-3. Freshman Reka Kelemen came up in a tough?spot to win her match at No. 6 singles, giving the Cyclones the victory?over the Bulldogs. The Cyclones improved to 3-2 on the season.
"Reka played really well under pressure," ISU head coach Michele Conlon?said. "Her match was last and she ended up winning it in a tiebreaker,?10-8. It is great to see a freshman succeed under all the team?pressure."
The match between Kelemen and Drake's Daria Zawislak lasted?approximately three hours. Kelemen's win improves her record to 4-1 on?the young season. Drake and Iowa State were tied at three points each?going into Kelemen and Zawislak's battle.
Iowa State opened the match winning two of three doubles matches,?earning the doubles point and taking the early 1-0 lead over Drake. Kara?Hickey and Liza Wischer defeated Irina Kalashnikova and Daria Zawislak,?8-0, improving to 3-1 on the dual season and avenging a doubles loss to?Drake in the Hawkeye Invitational on Jan. 25. Caitlin Loprinzi and?Alyssa Palen also won their doubles match, 8-4.
In singles play, Loprinzi defeated Sarah Plowman, 6-0, 6-1. The ISU?senior is now 5-0 in dual matches this season, defeating opponents from?Drake, Nebraska, Minnesota, Western Illinois and Wisconsin-Green Bay.
Along with Kelemen and Loprinzi, freshman Liza Wischer was also?successful in singles play, defeating the Bulldogs' Kari Sloboth, 7-5,?6-0.
Senior Chrissy Derouin played a tough match at No. 3 singles,?but lost in the third set.
"It was a hard fought match," Conlon said. "We are going to have to come?out hard tomorrow. We can celebrate, but we have to start thinking about?the tough match we have coming up tomorrow."
The Cyclones face Illinois-Chicago Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at the Ames?Racquet and Fitness Center. The Flames are 2-3 on the season. They have won?11 straight Horizon League titles and have been to nine consecutive NCAA?tournaments.?
