AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State tennis team tried to win in dramatic fashion on back-to-back nights, but were unable to come away with the victory against Illinois-Chicago. The Flames defeated the Cyclones, 4-3, on Saturday at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center.
The match came down to a battle between Iowa State senior captain Chrissy Derouin and Illinois- Chicago's Amy Jellish at No. 5 singles. Derouin battled, but Jellish came away with the win, 7-5, 6-4.
"I thought Chrissy really laid it all on the line today," said ISU head coach Michele Conlon. "She fought very hard but was unable to come away with the win."
The match opened with heated doubles matches. ISU's Erin Karonis and Derouin came away with the 8-4 win over the Flame's Lubica Nadasska and Kristen McPhillips. The Flames came back and won No. 3 doubles by a score of 8-3. Cailtin Loprinzi and Alyssa Palen forced a tiebreaker by tying the match at 8-8, but Grace Gill-Morlis and Ulrikke von Ubisch of UIC were able to come away with the tiebreaker (7-3), the win and the doubles point.
In singles play, Iowa State's Karonis ran away with her match, defeating Nadasska, 6-1, 6-1. At No. 4 singles, Loprinzi extended her winning streak to six matches, improving to 6-0 on the spring dual season. She defeated Gill-Morlis, 6-4, 6-2. Liza Wischer was also successful in singles play, notching a victory over Jenna Reisch, 6-4, 6-0.
"Erin did a great job of rebounding from her losses yesterday to Drake," said Conlon. "As a freshman, to turn around and come back with great matches in both singles and doubles, shows her toughness."
Saturday's match saw the return of Kara Hickey to singles action. The junior from Columbia, Mo., has not played in a singles match since the Big 12 Championships last April, due to injury. Hickey lost in her singles debut, 6-1, 6-0, to Ilinca Critescu. She has previously competed in doubles this season.
Iowa State returns to action Friday at 3 p.m. at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center against the No. 4 Baylor Bears.
