AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State tennis team lost to the No. 4 Baylor Bears, 6-1, on Friday at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center. The loss moves the Cyclones to 3-4 on the season and Baylor to 12-1.
Reka Kelemen, a freshman from Budapest, Hungary, put one in the win column and earned the Cyclones lone point, defeating Natalie Holmes, 7-5, 6-2. Kelemen improved to 5-1.
"I was very pleased to see her close out the match at the end," Conlon said of Kelemen.
The Cyclones began the day with tough doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles, the 41st-ranked Baylor doubles team of Taylor Ormond and Jelena Stanivuk defeated Erin Karonis and Chrissy Derouin, 8-1. At No. 2 doubles, senior Caitlin Loprinzi and junior Kara Hickey played a back-and-forth match early on with Lenka Broosova and Zuzana Chmelerova, but lost late, 8-4. ISU freshmen Kelemen and Liza Wischer were able to come away with a win vs. Jana Bielikova and Natalie Holmes, 8-6.
"Liza and Reka really played outstanding doubles," said ISU head coach Michele Conlon. "I thought they really played well today."
At No. 1 singles, Karonis took her first set with eighth-ranked Broosova to a tiebreaker. Broosova won the first set 7-6 and the second 6-0. Loprinzi was also able to force a tiebreaker in the first set, but Bielikova came away with the win, 7-6, 6-3. In similar fashion to Karonis and Loprinzi, Derouin forced a tiebreaker with Stanivuk, but Stanivuk won the match, 7-6, 6-0.
Friday's loss marked the end of Loprinzi's six-match win streak. The senior from Rochester, Minn., won matches over Drake, Illinois-Chicago, Minnesota, Nebraska, Western Illinois and Wisconsin-Green Bay. Loprinzi is now 6-1 in dual matches on the season, pacing the Cyclones in singles victories.
"I thought the team fought hard today," said Conlon. "A lot of credit goes to Baylor for closing out those sets. They found the confidence to pull some of those matches out."
ISU will return to dual play next Saturday at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center against No. 70 Texas Tech. The match begins at 3:30 p.m.
