FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Cyclone tennis team fell to the 53rd-ranked Big Green of Dartmouth on Wednesday, 6-1. The loss moves Iowa State to 4-6 in duals this season. Dartmouth's mark improved to 10-1, after wins vs. the Cyclones and Coastal Carolina on Wednesday.
The Cyclone's lone win came from senior Caitlin Loprinzi, who defeated Dartmouth's Jesse Adler, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. For the third time this season, she came back and won a match after losing the first set. The Rochester, Minn., native accomplished similar feats against Western Illinois and Minnesota. The win moves Loprinzi to 8-2 on the season and is her second win at the No. 3 spot after defeating her Florida Gulf Coast opponent Tuesday. Adler was 6-2 in dual matches before losing to Loprinzi.
Freshman Erin Karonis lost at No. 1 singles to Molly Scott. The match went three sets with Karonis winning the second set in a tiebreaker, but losing the first and third sets 6-2.
"Erin did a great job after starting down in her match, as did Caitlin," said ISU head coach Michele Conlon. "This is a reflection of how hard they work in practice."
Reka Kelemen won her first set against Ashley Mitchell. Mitchell a freshman from Charleston, S.C., won 7-6 in the second set and won a tiebreaker in place of the third set, 10-3.
"I thought the team fought awfully hard today," said Conlon. "Dartmouth is a good, solid team up and down their lineup."
Iowa State lost all of its doubles matches to their foes from Hanover, N.H. At No. 2 doubles, junior Kara Hickey and Loprinzi were defeated by Scott and Megan Zebroski, 8-4. Alyssa Palen and Liza Wischer also fell to the Big Green by a score of 8-4.
