AMES, Iowa ? The 2008 Iowa State volleyball schedule will feature matches against 15 NCAA Tournament qualifiers in addition to home matches against Drake, Iowa and Northern Iowa in the Cyclones' quest for a third-straight NCAA Tournament berth. The Cyclones, who went 19-14 in 2007 and advanced to the school's first-ever NCAA Regional Semifinal, return four starters and libero Ashley Mass from last year's record-setting squad.
“This should be a really good schedule for us this fall,” said ISU head coach Christy Johnson, who enters her fourth year as head coach. “I expect several great matches before we even get to the Big 12, which will be strong like always.”
The season opens at the Panther Invitational in Milwaukee, Wis., Aug. 29-30 with matches against host UW-Milwaukee, the Horizon League regular season champions last season, and NCAA qualifiers Illinois State and Mississippi. The Cyclones will open the tournament against Illinois State at 11 a.m. on Aug. 29 before facing the Panthers at 7:30 p.m. The tournament, which will mark a homecoming of sorts for ISU players Amy Vos, Ashley Mass and Debbie Stadick, will conclude with a contest against Mississippi at noon on Aug. 30.
“We're very excited to be going to Milwaukee,” said Johnson. “We'll have three players on our roster from that area, so it will be a great opportunity for them to play in front of their friends and family.”
After a match at Creighton on Sept. 2, ISU heads east for the Middle Tennessee Invitational in Murfreesboro, Tenn., on Sept. 5-6. The Cyclones will face Middle Tennessee, which advanced to the regional semifinals for the first time in school history a year ago, in addition to Appalachian State and Florida International.
After a seven-match road trip to open the season, ISU comes home to the friendly confines of Hilton Coliseum for a mid-week contest against NCAA qualifier Northern Iowa on Sept. 10 at 6:30 p.m.
The following weekend ISU will play host to its own tournament for the first time since 2005, welcoming Iowa, Drake and Xavier to Ames for the two-day tournament. The Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series matchup against Iowa is slated for Friday, Sept. 12 with matches against Drake and NCAA qualifier Xavier set for Sept. 13.
“It's going to be a great week for volleyball and we are looking forward to having the other three Iowa schools at Hilton in the same week,” said Johnson. “We hope to bring in some great crowds that week and create a lot of excitement around Iowa State Volleyball.”
The 20-match Big 12 schedule begins the following week as the Cyclones host Texas A&M on Wednesday, Sept. 17. ISU has won the last two Big 12 openers. A trip to Kansas the following Saturday marks the first Big 12 road match of the season. The conference schedule features a home-and-home with each of the other 10 Big 12 schools that sponsor volleyball.
Perennial national power Nebraska comes to Ames on Sept. 27 and the Cyclones wrap up league play at home against Kansas on Nov. 29.
Start times for all home matches except the Drake match (2 p.m.) are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Times are subject to change.
The first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament will be held from Dec. 4-7 at selected host sites. The regionals are slated for Dec. 11-14, and the NCAA Final Four will be held in Omaha, Neb., Dec. 18-20.
