AMES, Iowa ? Iowa State women's basketball coach Bill Fennelly was named as an assistant coach for the 2008 USA Basketball Under 18 Women's National Team on Thursday. Fennelly will serve on a staff with head coach Carol Owens (Northern Illinois) and Terri Mitchell (Marquette).
“To me there is no greater honor in our profession than coaching for USA Basketball,” Fennelly said. “I am excited to represent Iowa State and the USA in such a prestigious event. I have great respect professionally and personally for Carol and Terri. I hope to add to a great staff that is already in place.”
The 12-member roster for the USA U18 National Team was chosen earlier in June after three days of trials in Colorado Springs, Colo. The team will train in Colorado July 10-16, and in Washington D.C., July 17-20, before departing for the 2008 FIBA Americas U18 Championships for Women, July 23-27, in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Fennelly served as the head coach of the U.S. team for the World University Games in South Korea in 2003, and was an assistant coach on the USA Women's Olympic Festival staff in 1994.
2008 FIBA Americas U18 Championship for Women
The FIBA Americas U18 Championship for Women will feature six national teams from North, South and Central America and the Caribbean from July 23-27, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The top four finishing teams qualify for the 2009 FIBA U19 Women's World Championship, which will be held July 23-Aug. 2 in Bangkok, Thailand.
The six participating teams include Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Puerto Rico, USA and Venezuela. The 2008 FIBA Americas U18 Championship will be played in one phase utilizing a round robin system. The established FIBA system will be used to break any ties that result between the teams.
Originally known as the FIBA Americas Junior World Championship Qualifying Tournament, the event had been held every four years since 1988. FIBA changed its calendar, however, and the tournament is now conducted every other year, followed in the next summer by the FIBA U19 World Championship.
USA women's teams boast of a remarkable 28-2 overall record in U18/Junior Qualifiers and have won gold in 1988, 2000, 2004 and 2006, while capturing silver in 1992 and 1996.
