AMES, Iowa ?Lucca Staiger will return to Ames with a championship ring. Staiger was a member of Germany's U20 national team that captured the 2008 FIBA U20 Division B European Championship in Targu Mures, Romania last week. The Germans were undefeated in the tournament (8-0), capping their title run with a 110-102 double-overtime victory over Belgium in the championship game. The win assures the German team a move up to Division A next season.
Staiger, a native of Blaustein, Germany, had an off night offensively vs. the Belgium squad, scoring just six points. However, Staiger was second on the team in rebounding (8) and dished out a team-high four assists to help his team win the title.
Playing on an extremely balanced team, Staiger was among four players to average double figures in scoring throughout the tournament (10.3 ppg). He had a team-high 16 3-pointers, making 42.1 percent of his shots from beyond the arc. He was third on the team in minutes played at 20.6 mpg.
Staiger, who will be a sophomore next year at Iowa State, will now spend the next two weeks on Germany's A2 national team before returning to Ames.
