AMES, Iowa? The Iowa State soccer team will play its final exhibition match Friday at 7 p.m. when the Cyclones play host to the alumni game at the ISU Soccer Complex.
The alumni match will allow ISU players to reconnect with former players and will also give the team valuable match experience.
“The alumni game is a great chance for our players to compete against an outside group in a somewhat relaxed atmosphere,” Cyclone coach Wendy Dillinger said. “It also generates pride for Cyclone soccer and brings former ISU soccer players back and keeps them involved in the program. We are beginning to build an alumni base and the support and involvement of those who have paved the way is important in our growth and development.”
While the alumni game is a more relaxed atmosphere, Dillinger clearly has goals for what she wants to see from her squad after a week of practice following a 2-0 win over Creighton.
“We have spent the majority of time since the game against Creighton tightening up our defense and building on our attacking style,” Dillinger said. “(Associate head coach) Tim Bennett has done a fabulous job teaching and organizing our back line and is now working with them to begin our attack. (Assistant coach) Ben Madsen has been pulling double duty in training the goalkeepers and also using his speed in training to put the backs under pressure. The midfielders and forwards have gained momentum and ambition in developing and attacking at speed with numbers. It has been a great week and we are all excited to see how it comes together in the alumni game.”
Following the alumni match, the Cyclones will begin preparing exclusively for their season-opening opponent, Illinois. The Illini will host ISU Friday, Aug. 29, in Champaign, Ill., with kickoff slated for 7:30 p.m.
