AMES, Iowa ? It took extra points in each set but Iowa State was able to fend off Iowa, 3-0 (28-26, 27-25, 26-24), to capture the first two points in the 2008 Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series. The Cyclones have now won four straight over the Hawkeyes.
“It is nice to get Iowa State off to a good start in the Cy-Hawk series,” Iowa State head coach Christy Johnson said. “We had some opportunities that we shouldn't have had. I feel like there are a lot of things we could do better but we'll take this win and build off it.”

The Cyclones (6-3) had four players in double-figures, led by 12 kills each from Mary Bisenius, Rachel Hockaday and Jen Malcom. Hockaday was on fire in the match, ripping her 12 kills on 29 attacks with just one hitting error for a .379 percentage.
Victoria Henson reached double-figures for the fourth straight match with 11 kills. Kaylee Manns had 44 assists and 10 digs for her fifth double-double this season and the 39th of her career. Ashley Mass and Iowa's Emily Hiza had a match-high 15 digs. It was Mass' 35th consecutive match with 10 or more digs.
The Cyclones out hit the Hawkeyes, .250 to .236, and had 9.5 blocks to Iowa's seven. Diane Kieger had a match-high six block assists in the match to go along with five kills.
In the first set, ISU fought off three set points to take the 28-26 win. After an attack error by Henson made it 24-21 Hawkeyes, Hockaday blasted her fourth kill of the set to cut the lead to two. The Hawkeyes called a timeout and Henson promptly served up an ace which was followed by back-to-back attack errors from the Hawkeyes, putting ISU up 25-24. The teams went back-and-forth before Hockaday ripped another kill and Malcom and Manns teamed up on a block to give ISU the win.
More drama followed in the second stanza with Iowa making the late rally to force extra points. ISU led 24-21 in the second but Iowa tallied three straight to knot it up at 24-24. The Cyclones grabbed a short-lived lead on a kill by Bisenius, but Iowa got the next point to make it 25-25. After Malcom put away a kill, ISU again turned to the block, this one by Victoria Henson and Diane Kieger, to secure the 2-0 lead heading into the break.
Another late rally in the third set went in favor of the Cyclones as ISU rallied for the 26-24 win. The Hawkeyes led 23-19 before ISU went on the offensive with a pair of kills from Hockaday and a pair of blocks to take the win.
The Hawkeyes (3-4) got 11 kills from Megan Schipper in the loss. Catherine Smale joined Hiza in double-digits with 11 digs in the match.
Tournament action will continue Saturday at 10 a.m. with Iowa facing Xavier. Iowa State and Drake will play at noon with the night session beginning at 4:30 p.m.
Xavier 3, Drake 1
AMES, Iowa- In the opening match of the Iowa State Tournament, Xavier rallied from a first set loss to defeat Drake 3-1 (17-25, 25-17, 25-18, 25,22).
Xavier (5-2) was led by a 17-kill performance from Hillary Otte. Xavier Libero Megan Hellmann provided 17 digs and Claire Paszkiewicz added 41 assists.
Drake (7-2) was led by Angela Bys' 15 kills to go with 26 digs from Alana Wittenburg and 36 assists from Chelsea Lauersdorf.
