“Our serving was really good tonight,” Iowa State head coach Christy Johnson said. “It helps our defense so much when we serve tough because they can't run their offense effectively.”
When the ISU serve wasn't scoring points Henson was, blasting eight kills in the first set and five in the second and third frames.
“I am really impressed with how she (Henson) has improved,” Johnson said. “She was driving balls and getting kills. She has become much better at taking sets that aren't perfect and terminating them.”
Henson, who has been in double-digits the last seven contests, was the only player in double-figures in the match while Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week Ashley Mass had 18 digs for ISU. Kaylee Manns had 23 assists and nine digs, just missing on her sixth double-double of the season. Diane Kieger had four kills without an error and Jen Malcom finished with four kills and six block assists for ISU, which out blocked A&M eight to seven and held the Aggies to a .062 hitting efficiency.
The Cyclones held preseason All-Big 12 picks Sarah Ammerman and Mary Batis at bay for most of the evening . Ammerman had just six kills to go with five hitting errors while Batis was negative on the evening, committing six errors and tallying only five kills. Freshman Kelsey Black came off the bench to lead the Aggies with seven kills.
In the first set, ISU used a 6-0 run to cruise to a 25-16 win. After Kelsey Bryant put away an attack to tie it at 12-12, ISU forced an attack error and rode the serve of Mary Bisenius to the big run. The Cyclones extended their lead to seven on an ace by Mass and went on to the nine-point win. Henson finished with eight kills in the set and Mass and Manns dug eight balls each.
The Cyclone offensive attack came alive in the second set as ISU hit .588 to win 25-11 and head into the intermission with a 2-0 lead. The Cyclones trailed very early in the set but were able to get the attack going and went onto the big win. ISU scored the final eight points of the set as A&M struggled with their serve receive, getting aced on the final two points of the frame.
The third set was much more closely contested, with A&M holding a lead at 24-23 after a kill by Bryant. The Cyclones turned to their terminator, Henson, who ripped a kill to tie it back up before Manns pushed over her second kill to give ISU match point. On the next point, Bryant pushed an attack wide giving the Cyclones their third straight Big 12 opening win.
The Cyclones will hit the road for the next two matches, starting Saturday at Kansas. ISU will return home Saturday, Sept. 27 to face Nebraska on Gold Rules Day. Admission to the match will be $1.
