LAWRENCE, Kan. ? Iowa State won the first two sets but was unable to contain Kansas' outside hitter Karina Garlington, who finished with a career-high 29 kills, as the Jayhawks rallied to defeat the Cyclones, 3-2 (21-25, 23-25, 25-20, 25-22, 15-10), Saturday at the Horejsi Center.
The Cyclones (9-4, 1-1 Big 12) out blocked Kansas (7-4, 1-1), 13 to seven, but had no answer for Garlington, who hit .328 en route to her career day. ISU also out dug KU, 62-59, but the Jayhawks had a .264 hitting percentage in the match compared to just .235 for ISU. The Cyclones entered the match fourth in the Big 12, holding opponents to a .146 hitting percentage.

Jen Malcom tied a career-high with 18 kills while hitting .548 and recording a solo block and seven block assists. Rachel Hockaday posted her second career double-double with 13 kills and 14 digs. Victoria Henson was also in double-digits for the Cyclones with 15 kills while Ashley Mass dug 16 balls to reach double-figures for the 39th straight match.
Both teams came out firing in the first set with Iowa State out hitting Kansas, .357 to .324, to take the 25-21 win. In the set, ISU used two key runs en route to the win. With the scored 11-10 Kansas, ISU rattled off six straight on Hockaday's serve to go up 16-11. After the Jayhawks had closed the gap to two at 20-18, ISU scored three straight to regain control. Malcom had seven first set kills for the Cyclones while Garlington posted seven for the Jayhawks.
The second set saw the Cyclones again roll off two key runs on their way to the 25-23 win. Hockaday served ISU to four straight to help the Cyclones to a 14-11 lead. Kansas would bounce back, however, scoring five straight to go on top 18-16. The Cyclones scrapped back, taking a 22-21 lead on an attack error by KU. After the Jayhawks closed the lead to one at 24-23, Hockaday ripped a kill through the block to give the Cyclones a 2-0 lead heading into the intermission.
In the third set, KU hit .323 and used a 6-2 run early to push its lead to 14-9. The Jayhawks were able hold off the Cyclones, who closed the gap to two at 21-19 on a Malcom kill, and win the set 25-20 and extend the match.
The fourth frame was closely contested with 14 tie scores and five lead changes but KU took the 25-22 win to force a fifth and deciding set.
Kansas went into the fifth set firing, getting three kills from Garlington to open a 4-0 edge in the frame. ISU scrapped back and cut the deficit to three at 8-5 but the Jayhawks scored the next two points to force an ISU timeout. The Jayhawks extended their lead to 14-7 before ISU scored the next three points. Following a Jayhawk timeout, Natalie Uhart put down a kill to give Kansas its first win over Iowa State since 2004.
Iowa State is back in action Wednesday as it travels to Austin, Texas for a Big 12 match with the third-ranked Longhorns.
