AMES, Iowa--The Iowa State soccer team will play in two states in less than forty-eight hours this weekend. The Cyclones travel to Chicago Friday to play DePaul at 4 p.m. and turn back around to Iowa for a clash with Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls Sunday at 3 p.m. DePaul has started the season 0-4 while the Panthers are 0-2-1.
Cyclone Notebook
? Iowa State is in its 13th season of soccer. The Cyclones are two wins shy of the 100th win in school history, holding a 98-120-19 all-time record.
? ISU returns seven starters from a year ago, with 10 other letterwinners and eight newcomers making up the 2008 team.
? The Cyclones are coming off a tough weekend in Champaign, Ill. ISU fell to both Illinois, 3-1, and Pittsburgh,4-1. Juniors Lauren Odino and Elise Reid were the goalscorers while sophomore Jordan Bishop and freshman Laura Wooster were credited with assists.
? DePaul leads the all-time series against ISU 2-1. The most recent match was a Sept. 7, 2003, 2-0 win for the Blue Demons.
? Iowa State holds a 4-0 all-time series edge over Northern Iowa. Last season, on Sept. 7, the Cyclones stormed back from a 1-0 deficit to down the Panthers 4-1 in Ames. The match's last three goals came in the final seven minutes. Elise Reid had a double for the Cyclones and Lauren Odino also had a goal.
? During the preseason, ISU was led by juniors Elise Reid and Lauren Odino. Reid scored two goals and had an assist against the alumni, while Odino netted both goals against Creighton and had an assist against the alumni. Senior Leslie Hill also tallied a goal against the alumni. The Cyclones defeated Creighton, 2-0, and the alumni, 3-0, in exhibition play.What a Difference a Year Makes:
? When Iowa State and Northern Iowa clash on Sept. 7 it will mark exactly a year since they last played. Since then, both programs have had a change at the head coaching position. Wendy Dillinger is in her debut campaign for the Cyclones and Jennifer Plante is in her first season with the Panthers.
Injuries, Injuries, Injuries:
? Only two matches into the season, the Cyclones are battling the injury bug. In the match against Pittsburgh, ISU had a total of eight players unavailable due to injury. It left the Cyclones with 15 available field players.
Score and Stats Don't Always Agree:
? In the 4-1 loss to Pittsburgh Sunday the Cyclones held a 3-0 corner advantage and had 18 shots to the Panthers' 11. Iowa State also had seven shots on goal while Pitt had six. The 18 ISU shots would have tied for the second most shots taken in a game during the 2007 campaign.
Records Watch:
? With 239 career saves, goalkeeper Ann Gleason is three stops shy of setting the ISU mark.
? Gleason is one shutout away from tying the career record of 10.
? Gleason's 14 career goalkeeper wins have her five victories from tying the career mark.
? With 3,865 minutes in net, Gleason is 1,031 (nearly 11.5 90-minute matches) minutes short of the career mark.
A Closer Look At DePaul
? DePaul is 0-4 this season with losses to Loyola-Chicago (2-1), Butler (2-1), Michigan State (3-0) and Toledo (2-0). The matches against Loyola-Chicago and Michigan State were home games for the Blue Demons.
? Sophomore Tara Strickland and freshman Dominique Locascio have tallied both of the Blue Demons' goals this season. Junior Shannon Williams and freshman Beth Perry have each dished out an assist. Freshman Morgan Celaya leads the squad with eight shots.
? The Blue Demons have used a pair of goalies on the season. Junior Brittni Lally and sophomore Kelsey Hoikes have split time in net with Hoinkes playing 205:41 minutes to Lally's 154:19. Lally has allowed three goals for a 1.75 average while Hoinkes has conceeded six goals for a 2.63 average.
? DePaul has yet to settle on a starting 11 as 18 players have started matches for the Blue Demons on the young season.
?Head coach Erin Chastain is in her first campaign at DePaul after being an assistant at Santa Clara where the Broncos reached the 2002 NCAA Championship title game in addition to runs to the 2004 semifinals and 2005 quarterfinals. Chastain was a four-year starter at Minnesota. Chastain's husband, Brad, is the brother of USA soccer all-time great Brandi Chastain.
? The Blue Demons are coming off a 5-13-1 2007 campaign and they went 2-9-0 in Big East Conference play.
A Closer Look At Northern Iowa
? Northern Iowa has gotten off to a sluggish start in 2008. The Panthers fell, 5-0, in their opener to Minnesota on Aug. 22, and followed that with a 2-1 loss to Georgia Southern on Aug. 29. UNI drew with Eastern Illinois Sunday, 0-0.
? Sophomore Laura Heaton is the lone goalscorer for the Panthers this season. Sophomore Kaitlyn Shepard has notched the Panthers' only assist. Sophomore Chelsie Hochstedler leads UNI with 15 shots.
? Freshman Lauren Potzman has spent every minute of the Panthers' season between the pipes. She has made 32 saves and has allowed an average of 2.06 goals per game.
? The Panthers went 6-10-2 in the 2007 season with a 1-4-1 record in the Missouri Valley Conference.
? The Panthers and Cyclones will clash on unfamilar ground for UNI. It will be the first time in 2008 Northern Iowa has played at the Mark Messersmith Track and Field Complex. The Panthers will have already made their home opener but it will be held at the Cedar Valley Soccer Complex. UNI splits their home dates with the soccer complex and the track and field complex.
? Head coach Jennifer Plante is in her first season as head coach of the Panthers after being an assistant during the 2007 campaign. Plante was a first-team all-Big Ten defender and conference Freshman of the Year while at Ohio State.
