AMES, Iowa ? Iowa State had more service aces and out dug Nebraska but fell short, dropping a 3-1 (21-25, 25-20, 25-27, 18-25) decision to the second-ranked Huskers Saturday evening at Hilton Coliseum in front of 4,294.
The Cyclones (9-6, 1-3 Big 12), who have taken just two sets off Nebraska (12-0, 4-0) since 1994, battled tough against the Huskers but were unable to scrape out the first win in school history over the conference foe. ISU had four service aces to just three for the Huskers and 75 digs to Nebraska's 70. The Huskers out blocked ISU 10 to six.

“We are close, very close,” Iowa State head coach Christy Johnson said. “It was just a couple of things, like serve and pass, here and there that broke down. This is the most competitive we've ever been against Nebraska. Up and down our roster I think this is the best we have matched up.”
ISU had a set point in the third frame that would have given it a 2-1 lead in the best of five match, but the Huskers scored three straight to get the important win it 27-25.
The Cyclones were led by 14 kills from Victoria Henson and 11 from Rachel Hockaday. Jen Malcom added 10 kills and four block assists. Setter Kaylee Manns was good all around, dishing out 42 assists with 11 digs and five kills. Ashley Mass had a match-high 27 digs, her 41st straight match in double-digits.
The Cyclones stormed out of the gate in the first set, grabbing a 5-0 lead behind Hockaday's serve. Nebraska then used a run of its own to tie it up at 11-11 and push forward for a 13-12 lead. The Cyclones were able to go ahead 17-14 on a kill from Diane Kieger, who finished with eight kills and hit .333 in the match, but Nebraska rattled off five straight and went on for the 25-21.
In the second, ISU fell behind early but reversed court and cruised to a 25-20 win to even it at 1-1 heading into the intermission. ISU trailed five one from the start but earned its first tie after a 6-0 run that made it 16-14 Cyclones. The Cyclones held off a few Husker runs and took the win.
The third set was the turning point of the match as ISU rallied back from a 20-11 deficit to take a 25-24 lead. Caitlin Mahoney's serve keyed the ISU rally as the freshman from Omaha, Neb., served ISU to four straight points with the set on the line. Mahoney's sixth serve came up just short, clipping the net to tie it at 25-25. The Huskers finished the match with back-to-back kills from Tara Mueller and Jordan Larson to win 27-25.
In the fourth, ISU fell behind early and was never able to get back into it as Nebraska held on for the 25-18 win.
Nebraska was led by Mueller, who finished with 16 kills. Kori Cooper had 12 and Larson and Amanda Gates finished with 11. Larson also had a team-high 19 digs while Kayla Banwarth finished with 17.
The Cyclones will be back in action Wednesday with a match at Missouri.
