ISU Opens Spring Season with Big Win over Drake

AMES, Iowa ? The Iowa State tennis team opened its spring season with a convincing 6-1 win over Drake Friday afternoon at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center.The Cyclones swept through doubles play before earning five wins in singles action.

In No. 1 doubles, Iowa State's Erin Karonis and Tessa Lang defeated Drake's Gabby Demos and Amanda Aragon, 8-6. Cyclones Maria Fernanda Macedo and Marie-Christine Chartier picked up a win over Jessica Aguilera and Jessica LaBarte 8-4. ISU's Reka Kelemen and Liza Wischer fiinished off the doubles sweep by knocking off DU's Veronika Leszayova and Kari Sloboth 8-4.

“We came out and played extremely well in singles,” head coach Armando Espinosa said. “We put a lot of pressure on them to come out and do more than they were used to. It was good for us to come out and beat them. It was a very good start for us to help our team build some confidence.”

The Cyclones dominated singles play as well, going 5-1 against the Bulldogs. In the No. 1 singles slot, Iowa State's Erin Karonis earned a straight-set victory over Veronika Leszayova 6-3, 6-3. ISU's Maria Fernanda Macedo had no trouble picking up the win in the No. 3 spot over Drake's Jessica LaBarte 6-0, 6-1. ISU sophomore Liza Wischer defeated Drake senior Kari Sloboth 6-1, 6-1.Marie-Christine Chartier also earned a singles win for the Cyclones over Jessica Aguilera 6-2, 6-0. After a battle in the first set, ISU's Alyssa Palen cruised in the second to defeat Amanda Aragon 7-5, 6-2.

Iowa State will host Creighton at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center Saturday, Jan. 31, at 3:30 p.m.
