Cyclone Tennis Earns Second Straight Win

AMES, Iowa ? The Iowa State tennis team knocked off the Creighton Bluejays 5-2, at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center Saturday, giving the Cyclones back-to-back wins to open the 2009 season. ISU went 2-1 in doubles and 4-2 in singles.

Iowa State senior Erin Karonis dominated Creighton's Tess Reddin with a 6-2, 6-0 singles win, while Cyclone Marie-Christine Chartier shut down Lindsey Erickson 6-0, 6-2.

ISU's Tessa Lang earned her first singles win of the spring season by defeating Creighton's Lauren Mastro 6-4, 6-2, in No. 2 singles. Iowa State sophomore Liza Wischer also added a singles win against Creighton's Kelsey Schmidt 6-1, 6-2.

“I think we did a good job, Creighton is not an easy team to play,” head coach Armando Espinosa said. “They came out and made us compete a little harder than expected, but it was good to see the effort from the student-athletes. The girls took care of business and got the job done.”

In No. 1 doubles play, Iowa State's Erin Karonis and Lang recorded a convincing win over Creighton's Tess Reddin and Nicole Nakaoka 8-1. Reka Kelemen and Liza Wischer defeated Creighton's Iowa natives Leesa and Sarah Cadwallader 8-3.

The Cyclones will travel to Minnesota Friday, taking on the Golden Gophers in their own tournament, for a 6 p.m. match. The tournament will continue on Saturday, when ISU plays Miami at 1 p.m.
