Cyclone Tennis Falls at Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. ? Erin Karonis and Liza Wischer remained undefeated in singles play, but the Iowa State tennis team fell 5-2 at Minnesota Friday in the Gophers' tournament.

“We came out flat in the doubles matches, but we picked it up in singles and competed better,” head coach Armando Espinosa said. “I think we are moving in the right direction.”

In No. 1 singles play, Erin Karonis fought back after falling in the first set to add another win to her record by defeating Karina Chiarelli 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. Karonis is now 3-0 in singles play. Liza Wischer earned ISU's other singles win for ISU against Jackie Sperling in No. 5 singles 6-4, 7-6 (8-6). Wischer is also undefeated this season in singles play (3-0).

Maria Fernanda Macedo put up a good fight at the No. 3 singles spot. After falling in the first set to UM's Tijana Koprivica (6-3), she won the second set by the same score. She dropped a tiebreaker, 7-4, that decided the third set.

The Cyclones will compete Saturday against Miami (Ohio) at the Minnesota beginning at 11:30 a.m.
