Iowa State Closes Out Play in the Gopher Tournament

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. ? Sophomore Liza Wischer earned her fourth singles win of the season to remain undefeated, but the Iowa State tennis team (2-2) finished play in the Gopher Tournament with a 6-1 loss to Miami (Ohio) Saturday afternoon.

“We played hard but we got outplayed,” ISU head coach Armando Espinosa said. “I was very proud of our efforts, but Miami of Ohio is a hard team to beat.”

In doubles play Iowa State's Marie-Christine Chartier and Maria Fernanda Macedo put up a great fight against Miami Ohio's Anastasia Dracheva and Megan Martzolf. The match was decided in a tie-breaker (7-4).

Wischer knocked off Miami's Brintney Larson 6-4, 1-6, (10-7) in the No. 5 singles slot. Erin Karonis saw her undefeated streak snapped when she fell to Miami's Monica Gorny, 6-3, 6-3.

The Cyclones will next play Feb. 21, against Massachusetts in the Syracuse Tournament. Play will begin at 9:30 a.m.
