ISU Tennis Shuts Out Massachusetts 7-0

AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State tennis team shut out the University of Massachusetts Saturday in the Syracuse Tournament, 7-0. ISU's Liza Wischer extended her winning streak with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Massachusetts' Maude Lecluyse and the Cyclones improved to 3-2 on the season with the win.

In singles play, Cyclone Erin Karonis earned a 7-5, 6-1 win over UM's Magdalena Ploch. Maria Fernanda Macedo pulled out a close win against Massachusetts' Kaitlyn Carpenter 6-3, 7-6(1). In No. 2 singles, ISU's Tessa Lang defeated Candynce Boney 6-2, 7-6(2). Alyssa Palen played a close match against Laura Denai, and won in a tiebreaker 2-6, 6-4, 10-4. Iowa State freshman Marie-Christine Chartier earned a 6-4, 6-2 win over Laura Danai.

The Cyclones went 2-1 in doubles play to earn the first point of the match. In No. 1 doubles play Karonis and Lang defeated UMass' Boney and Lecluyse, 8-4. Macedo and Chartier recorded a win over Massachusetts' Laura Denai and Tanisha Hodgson 8-6.

“I was very happy with the way we competed,” said head coach Armando Espinosa. “The University of Massachusetts was a good team, but we were able to take care of our opportunities. Hopefully we will repeat our performance tomorrow.”

The Cyclones will begin play Sunday at 8 a.m. against tournament host Syracuse.
