ISU Tennis Pulls Out Close Win at Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N. Y. ? The Cyclone tennis team put an end to Syracuse's undefeated season Sunday in the Syracuse Tournament with a 4-3 win over the Orange at the Drumlins Tennis Center. ISU went 4-2 in singles to make up for the lost point in doubles play.

Iowa State improved to 4-2 on the season with the victory.

ISU's Liza Wischer continued her winning streak in singles play, coming back from down a set to win 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 over Syracuse's Ashley Spicer. Iowa State's Erin Karonis defeated Syracuse's Emily Harman, 6-4, 6-2, while Cyclone freshman Marie-Christine Chartier had to win a tiebreaker in the first set to defeat the Orange's Simone Kalhorn 7-6 (8-6), 6-0. ISU's Maria Fernanda Macedo dominated Alessondra Parra with a 6-2, 6-4 win.

“I am very pleased with the way we competed,” ISU head coach Armando Espinosa said. “We came back after losing the doubles point and we found a way to win four singles matches. Liza clinched the match for us and that helps her to continue her undefeated record.”

The Cyclones will compete next Saturday against West Virginia in the Nebraska Tournament at 11:30 p.m. Iowa State will continue tournament play on Sunday in a Big 12 matchup against Nebraska.
