ISU Tennis Earns 6-1 Win Over West Virginia

LINCOLN, Neb. - Iowa State posted a strong 6-1 win over West Virginia Saturday at the Nebraska Tournament. The Cyclones (5-2) were down 1-0 after doubles play, but came on strong in singles action, winnig all six matches to defeat the Mountaineers.

“I think we certainly started out very slow in the doubles, but we found a way to rebound and came out on top in singles,” head coach Armando Espinosa said. “The momentum shifted our way when Erin got out on the court and we took advantage of the momentum.”

Liza Wischer extended her undefeated streak (7-0) after fighting back from a first set loss to win, 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 over West Virginia's Veronica Cardenas at the No. 5 singles slot. In No. 1 singles, Iowa State's Erin Karonis easily defeated Mountaineer Olga Elkin 6-0, 6-1.

Tessa Lang earned a 6-3, 6-4 win over West Virgina's Stephanie LaFortune, while Iowa State freshman Maria Fernanda Macedo pulled out a 6-1, 6-4 win over WVU's Monique Burton. ISU's Marie-Christine Chartier also found success in singles play, defeating West Virginia's Kathryn Haught 6-4, 6-4.

And in No. 6 singles action, Cyclone Alyssa Palen came back to win against Mountaineer Ashley Pilsbury 0-6, 6-2, 6-1. In an exhibition match Iowa State freshman Bolan Tarkoe defeated West Virginia's Milica Pantovic 8-0.

Iowa State freshmen Marie-Christine Chartier and Maria Fernanda Macedo found success in doubles play earning an 8-3 win over WVU's Stephanie LaFortune and Monique Burton. But the Cyclones fell in the other two doubles matches to give up an early 1-0 WVU lead.

Play will continue at the Nebraska Tournament Sunday at 11 a.m. as the Cyclones open Big 12 Conference play against host Nebraska.
