LINCOLN, Neb. ? Iowa State's Liza Wischer remained undefeated in singles play this spring, recording a 6-4, 7-5 win over Nebraska's 118th-ranked Ashley Finnigan. Despite Wischer's win, the Cyclones dropped a 5-2 match to Nebraska Sunday to open Big 12 Conference action in the Cornhuskers' tournament.
In doubles play, Iowa State's Marie-Christine Chartier and Maria Fernanda Macedo earned a win against Nebraska's Wiveca Swarting and Jennifer Holmberg in a 7-5 tiebreaker, but NU captured the doubles point to start the match.
ISU's Erin Karonis recorded a win at No. 1 singles over Nebraska's Madeleine Geibert in a tiebreaker, earning a 6-3, 2-6, (10-7) victory. Wischer improved to 7-0 in singles this season and earned her first Big 12 win of the season
“I think we just missed a great opportunity to start off the Big 12 season,” head coach Armando Espinosa said. “We had opportunities and just couldn't capitalize. We competed very well in singles, but we still aren't ready to take control of those opportunities yet.”
The Cyclones will hit the courts again at 9 a.m. March 7 at Illinois-Chicago.
