CHICAGO, Ill. ? The Iowa State tennis team earned a 4-3 win over the Illinois-Chicago Flames Saturday in Chicago. ISU's Liza Wischer remained undefeated after a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Amy Jellish, improving her record to 9-0. After losing the doubles point, the Cyclones fought back in singles to record a win, giving them a 6-3 record this season.
In other singles action, Iowa State's Erin Karonis recorded a 6-0, 6-3 win over UIC's Ilinca Cristescu. ISU freshman Maria Fernanda Macedo won in a tiebreaker to decide the second set against Illinois-Chicago's Kristen McPhillips 6-4, 7-6(4). Cyclone Marie-Christine Chartier earned a 7-6(5), 6-2 win over Elena Antakova.
Iowa State's Wischer and Tessa Lang earned the one doubles win for the Cyclone, defeating UIC's Jenna Reisch and Jellish 9-7.
“We need to improve our doubles play,” said ISU head coach Armando Espinosa. “We cannot expect to win four singles points against really good teams, but I am pleased that losing the doubles point has not affected our singles play.”
The Cyclones will return home to play UMKC Sunday at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center. Play will begin at 9 a.m.
