AMES, Iowa ? Iowa State head softball coach Stacy Gemeinhardt-Cesler has announced the signings of five preps to National Letters of Intent Thursday.
Joining the Cyclones next fall will be Sara Davison (St. Louis, Mo.), Evan Folks (Eudora, Kan.), Courtney Ghee (Des Moines, Iowa), Breeanna Holliday (Moorpark, Calif.) and Sara Rice (Millbrae, Calif.).
“When we started to fill out this class we needed to find a group of players that could do a lot of different things,” Gemeinhardt-Cesler said. “We are pleased with the players that have decided to play for us and believe they will help us as we continue to build our program.”
Davison will provide depth all over the diamond as a utility player for the Cyclones. At Parkway South High School in St. Louis, Mo., Davison hit .375 this fall and stole 25 bases on 28 attempts to lead the team. She had a career batting average of .403 and struck out just five times in four years of varsity ball. Davison plays ASA for the St. Louis Chaos.
“Sara (Davison) is a great all-around athlete that can play any position on the field,” Gemeinhardt-Cesler said. “She is a switch-hitter that has great speed and will be a great asset to us as we look to replace a lot of speed after this season.”
Folks attends Eudora High School where she hit .410 and was 19-for-19 on stolen bases as a junior. She was a second-team all-state pick as well as being named Eudora's most valuable player and defensive player of the year last season. She plays ASA for the KC Peppers Gold.
“Evan is a catcher with a great arm,” Gemeinhardt-Cesler said. “She's also a great athlete that runs well and she led her team in offense last year. She's good defensively as well and we need depth at the catcher position.”
Ghee, a senior at Des Moines Lincoln High School, is the only native Iowan in this year's class. Ghee hit .290 for the Railsplitters.
“Courtney is a local player from Lincoln in Des Moines so we've been recruiting her for a long time and it's good to get someone from inside the state,” Gemeinhardt-Cesler said. “She's a utility that can do a lot of things and she's a switch-hitter with good speed.”
Holliday attends Moorpark High School and was a first-team All-Maramonte League pick. She also earned defensive player of the year honors for her team last year. Holliday is currently playing ASA ball for the So. Cal. Victory USA Gold. In 2008, she was a member of the So. Cal. Panthers, who qualified for the ASA Gold Nationals.
“Breeanna is a pitcher who will be able to throw for us right away,” Gemeinhardt-Cesler said. “She has tremendous upside. She throws hard and throws a variety of pitches and she mixes up her speed well. She also can hit so she'll be able to contribute to things offensively, too.”
Rice will bolster the middle infield for the Cyclones as a second baseman with great softball experience. She prepped at Burlingame High School, where she hit .410 with 19 runs batted in as a junior. Rice plays ASA ball for the San Jose Sting 18 Gold.
“Sara (Rice) is a tremendous defensive second baseman who knows the game really well,” Gemeinhardt-Cesler said. “She's come from a really strong softball background. She hits for power and average so she'll definitely be a welcome addition to our team.”
