Cyclones Give Johnson-Lynch Win No. 100 With Sweep

MANHATTAN, Kan. ? No. 8 Iowa State hit .306 and used 15 kills from Victoria Henson to sweep Kansas State, 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-10), and hand fifth-year ISU head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch her 100th career win. Johnson-Lynch is the fastest coach in school history to reach the milestone victory.
The Cyclones (22-4, 14-3 Big 12) controlled the match from the start and it was Henson who led the charge, hitting .355 in the match and collecting her 12th double-double of the season with 15 kills and 12 digs. Rachel Hockaday hit .296 and added 11 kills, while freshman Jamie Straube had 10 kills and hit .444.
Defensively, ISU libero Ashley Mass was everywhere, digging 24 balls as the Cyclones held a 64-47 edge in digs. Kaylee Manns posted double-double 64 of her career, finishing with 40 assists and 10 digs.
In the opening set, ISU struggled early and fell behind 4-0 out of the gate before scoring four in a row to tie it. Later in the set ISU led 10-9 and scored seven of the next 10 points to break it open. The Cyclones hit .243 in the set and got four kills each from Henson and Straube to win 25-19.
The Cyclones controlled much of the second set but Kansas State hung tough and the set was tied at 14-14. Hockaday notched a kill and Manns and Stadick teamed up for a block to gain some separation for the Cyclones. The Wildcats trimmed the lead to one at 16-15, but ISU scored nine of the final 13 points to win 25-19. ISU hit .318 and held the Wildcats to a .178 hitting percentage in the set.
The third set was all Cyclones as they blistered the ball at a .370 clip and shut down the Wildcats' attack, holding KSU to a -.162 hitting percentage in the final frame to win 25-10.
Kansas State was led by JuliAnne Chisholm's seven kills and Lauren Mathewson's 14 digs.
The Cyclones owned a 7.5-4 edge in blocks, marking the ninth time in the last 13 matches ISU out blocked its opponent.
The Cyclones will return home Wednesday to host Kansas at 6:30 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum.
